Large changes in regulome size herald the main prokaryotic lineages.
Using a large-scale reconstruction of ancestral gene content, we show that radical changes in regulome size occur at the origins of major prokaryotic lineages. Subsequently, the duplication and deletion of regulators slows down in most lineages, except proteobacteria, significantly reducing the scaling of regulators and keeping their average proportion lineage-specific. Our results also suggest...
متن کاملEvolution of prokaryotic gene order: genome rearrangements in closely related species.
Conservation of gene order in prokaryotes has become important in predicting protein function because, over the evolutionary timescale, genomes are shuffled so that local gene-order conservation reflects the functional constraints within the protein. Here, we compare closely related genomes to identify the rate with which gene order is disrupted and to infer the genes involved in the genome rea...
متن کاملMolecular control of circadian rhythms.
Circadian rhythms are virtually ubiquitous in eukaryotes and have been shown to exist even in some prokaryotes. The generally accepted view is that these rhythms are generated by an endogenous clock. Recent progress, especially in the Drosophila, Neurospora and mouse systems, has revealed new clock components and mechanisms. These include the mouse clock gene, the Drosophila timeless gene, and ...
متن کاملGaining and losing the thermophilic adaptation in prokaryotes.
We studied the evolution of thermophily in prokaryotes using the phylogenetic relationships between 279 bacteria and archaea and their thermophilic amino acid composition signature. Our findings suggest several examples in which the capacity of thermophilic adaptation has been gained or lost over relatively short evolutionary periods throughout the evolution of prokaryotes.
متن کاملCircadian timekeeping in Neurospora crassa and Synechococcus elongatus.
At first, the saprophytic eukaryote Neurospora crassa and the photosynthetic prokaryote Synechococcus elongatus may seem to have little in common. However, in both organisms a circadian clock organizes cellular biochemistry, and each organism lends itself to classical and molecular genetic investigations that have revealed a detailed picture of the molecular basis of circadian rhythmicity. In t...
